Am I going to have to get rid of my little papillion dog?
ByI have been living in my apartment for 2 1/2 years now. On my birthday 3 months ago I was given a dog. In my lease there is a “no pets allowed” agreement. However I have seen people have dogs that live in the apartments around me so I never thought much of it. Also, when I first got the dog I asked one of the dog owner’s that had a dog why he was allowed. They said it is because he uses a cat litter box. Therefor I taught my dog to use a litter box. But my landlord walked by just went I was taking him outside to play. She said the dog would have to be gone by friday. She said I could try to appeal it with the head office, but it probably won’t be a good outcome. My dog is only 4lbs, he doesn’t shed because he has hair not fur. He also doesn’t bark and is potty trained. When no one is home we put him in a crate. My question is how can I convince my landlord to let me keep him. Should I offer to put another 500 damage deposit down if they are worried about him damaging the apartment?
I realize rules are rules and I will get rid of him if I have to. But the reason why I also didn’t think much of having a dog was because I saw that our previous landlord play with another tenants dog while she was walking by. However, there are new landlords now. But I had 3 different landlords since I lived here… they go through them quickly for some reason.

OK I am not sure about the laws were you are but here its very therapeutic to own a small animal so they don’t bother.
But like if you had a very large dog that barked up a storm and pooped in the hallways well yes they can say something they can also say something if a small animal does the same.
So what you can do not to take any chances house train your dog to go indoors : )

Rules are rules and you moved into a place with a no pets clause and then got a dog. You need to either be prepared to move or get rid of the dog. They likely won’t care about how good he is or any of the other reasons you listed. The reason is that if they make an exception for you then they have to be willing to make exceptions for others.

Move. You got the dog and if you are willing to put down a 500+ deposit to keep him there (and yes you should try that) you should be willing to move to a place that does accept dogs. By all means do everything you can to get the head office to let you keep the dog there, but if doesn’t work, consider moving.

Your lease very clearly states “No Pets”. No Pets means No Pets. You should give the dog back to the person that gave it to you in the first place.
I’d also be “outing” my other neighbors who have pets.

they may have allowed pets at one time then changed the lease…if the lease says no pets there is a reason it says that…my cousin moved into a high rise…the month before she moved in they allowed pets…but the lease was changed allowing the tennats that had dogs to keep them but no others be brought in…she had to get rid of he shih tzu or move…
