Did you git them from a breeder, shelter, rescue… and what kind of dog(s) is it purebred? mutt?

I have 2 dogs, an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog (Charlotte) and a Australian Cattle Dog (Missy) mix. I got Char when the ranch I worked for when bankrupted and they had to get rid of everything including their dogs so I asked for her and gave her to me lol. I got Missy at the pound. She was going to be euthanized the next day if no one took her.

I have a two year old Australian cattle dog mix, she used to be very friendly and playful with dogs unroll she was attacked by a dog twice and is now anxious of any stranger dogs, she is still confident and playful around dogs she knows but if we walk past strangers with a dog she sticks to me and stiffens up, if they’re friendly she slowly relaxs but if the dog is feral she gets protective, if
it’s a dog behind a fence barking then she goes absolutely nutz. Now with calm dogs behind fences she still goes nutz .

A few days ago she was off the lead at a park and two Maltese terriers chased after her, barking and growling and trying to bite, my dog just sped off with her tail between her legs, when the owner got a hold of his dogs n I got my dog back the other dogs calmed down and rass sat beside me, one of the little dogs took a step towards us and suddenly my dog let out a very deep growl

I never tell her off when she’s around dogs because I don’t want her to associate dogs with getting told off , so I simply correct her and walk away. She also gets praise when walking towards a stranger dog and I don’t force her to go up to the dog

Hi, we are constantly thinking about future dogs in our home.

Here is a little bit about us. We are in our mid to late 20s currently. And we are expecting our first (and only) child, a daughter, in February.

We don’t plan on getting another dog until she is atleast 4 years old. Though if we want to adopt we will have to wait until she is 7 or 8. (shelter rules)

We feel its never to early to start thinking about the right dog.

We are active, we like to travel. We want to take the dog with us when we travel to the mountains and the beach. We like to take long walks. We have access to a medium sized yard for play but are looking to buy about 4 acres out in the country before long. We would prefer a short to medium haired dog. Basically a good bath, brushing, and nail trim and the dog is good to go. Our dog would be participating in Obedience Classes.

Some of the breeds we are interested in are:
(Now keep in mind some I like and some my husband likes, so some may be very different dogs)

Redbone Coonhound
Blue Tick Coonhound
German Shorthaired Pointer
Catahoula Leopard Dog
Bloodhound
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Australian Cattle Dog
Irish Setter
Shetland Sheepdog
Alaskan Malamute
Dalmatian
Gorden Setter
German Shepherd
Labrador Retriever
American Pit Bull Terrier (husband is iffy on that one…they take a very strong willed owner)
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Beagle
Jack Russell Terrier
Patterdale Terrier
Norwegian Elkhound

If you could help us weave through these a bit, maybe rule a few out that would be great.

Also we need a dog that can get along with other dogs. (We have 2 small dogs already)

ADD: NO SUGGESTIONS PLEASE. Trying to stick to the list.
ADD: I asked a similar question a bit ago but no one seemed to get I was asking which dogs NOT to get

He’s a German Shepherd Dog/Australian Cattle Dog Mix… How big do you think he would get?
I knew you wouldn’t be able to tell me exactly, I just wanted an estimate you know? So, I’m gonna go with just a little bit smaller.

Posted by: | Comments (6)

I have this dog that i got i have no idea what she is though. as far as i can tell (and been told by animal control) is that she is a pitbull mix from her dog aggressiveness and the brindle color. also ive been told she has Australian cattle dog in her cause of the coat pattern and long hair on her hind legs and at the dog park people come up to me asking if she is an Australian cattle dog.. i would guess akita or shiba inu from her tail.she is 42lbs brindle 9yr old.

Last September while visiting my sister and BIL, I found my sixteen year old nephew “helicoptering” his three year old bulldog by a choke chain
After I bawled the sh!t out of him, I told his parents, who grounded him and gave him a stern lecture. I realize I should have insisted they get rid of the dog, but it was family and the dog was not otherwise abused, so my judgment was hazy.
Anyways, I went back in December, and on multiple occasions found him teasing the dog, physically abusing the dog(kicking around, etc.) and just being a general @ss. During this time he was also expelled from school for confiscated drugs.
So this time, after helping my sister find the dog a new home, I suggested my nephew come out to my farm for a visit. My sister eagerly welcomed any help. He came out in January.

I live on a 10 acre rural farm devoted to my six dogs and twenty-some cats. I have a blue merle border collie, a labrador retriever, two australian cattle dogs, a german shepherd dog, and an english setter.
I’m also, for the last eight months, fostering two pitbull mixes and some sort of large heinz 57.
All my dogs, despite different breeds/personalities, have been S/Ned and get along great thanks to excessive socialization and proper introductions.

If you can’t already see where this is going…my nephew spent everyday of three months outside with my dogs–I supervised, but also gave him his share of work to do; feeding, exercising, cleaning up after… and surprise surprise, all it took was some strong handed leadership and he’s a completely changed person.
He’s great with my dogs, and has learned everything from the basics of agility course training to how to wear out high energy pitbulls with a flirt pole.
I take great pride in how I care for my dogs…apart from buying all my dogs from extremely reputable breeders, i feed them high end kibble, provide extensive vet care, and provide a healthy amount of exercise to keep them lean and healthy.
I have spent the last 3months teaching my nephew how to provide that care.

He returned home the end of March, and is already asking his parents to take him to the shelter and buy him a dog. They think it’s great that he’s learned what he has, and are seeing a wonderful change, but I’m not so sure.
He’s certainly doing better, and I want to encourage his improvements, but I’m worried that going back home to his old influences may send him back into old behavior. His parents are going to stand by my decision, so whether they get him another dog is on me. I need opinions!!!

Okay what is a good dog for a person who has had these types of dogs.

Between my husband and I growing up we had:

Myself: (All these dogs are still in the family except 1 toy poodle who passed away at age 14 and the Shih Tzu and the Spitz mix was my grandparents dog and they had to give her up when my grandmother got sick)

Shih Tzu
Toy Poodle (2)
Lab
Lab mix
Beagle
Maltese
Spitz mix (I think)

My husband:
Minature Schnauzer (passed away at age 14 not that long ago)
Old English Sheepdog (passed away at age 6)

Together we currently have:
Jack Russell Terrier mix
Minature Poodle

What types of dogs are good with this kind of dog experience.

Just curious

(Chances are we will adopt another mutt from a shelter or get a purebred from a breeder but that is way off in the future…..our poodle Zackie is doing better)

Breeds we like: (I know they are all very different dogs…we tend to adapt to the dog we have)

Dalmatian
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Shiba Inu
Alaskan Klee Kai
German Shepherd
Australian Kelpie
Australian Cattle dog (Blue Heeler)
Entelbucher Mountain Dog
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
German Shorthaired Pointer
Beagle
We do not have any kids but we hope to one day. And we probably will not get another dog until that kid is older (there are a few other factors that might make it happen sooner but I don’t want to think about those right now…..too sad)

We are somewhat active. We try to do 2 one hour long walks a day. We are getting a sand box for digging. On the weekends we go for a 4 mile walk both on Saturday and Sunday. We are getting our current dogs in agility in the next year. We will be living close to a lot of land soon…..relatives with a farm will be near by and there is lots of area for us to take the dog to run. We are working toward a house with a yard (should have that soon)

My schedule is flexible and can be home to let the dogs out midday.

Anyways Just a little about us.
