I Think my Dog is Fixated?
Posted by: | CommentsLet me first start off on the weather here.
There is snow everywhere and under that snow is ice, which the snow is melting slowly so the roads are a bit slick.
Next, my dog.
My dog is a female Australian Cattle Dog who will be 2 in April and is very hyperactive because I do not walk here but will be soon, and has a bit of aggression towards dogs. And little kids.
And finally, to the question or whatever.
Tonight I took my dog out with the leash because I didn’t want to wait for her to come back, and I myself wanted to walk in my very creepy at night (especially when there is snow everywhere!) wood-like backyard! After I traced the perimeter about 1 time, I took the leash off… With no pee or poop coming out of my dog’s a**. So I decided to go in the front, to check the roads with her. Who knows, maybe I’d have some luck there?
So I traveled to the front, and my dog was great! She did get a bit fixated on the road that eventually leads the entrance of the neighborhood, but when I called her to me she came!
I think now is about time I tell you about… “The Big Black Dog”.
There is a gentle dog opposite of the entrance (you take a right coming out of my driveway to get to the dog and a left to get to the entrance) and, well, my dog wants to really play with it! It’s very gentle, no growling or snarling, but is very hyper! When I walk by it with Kaia, it runs along the fence and Kaia goes absolute crazy, tugging and lunging and barking and whining…
So tonight, what do you know? The Big Black Dog FRICKEN BARKS ONE TIME and my dog immediatly whips around and faces in it’s direction. Her body is stock still, her ears forward, her tail straight up, her body tense.
“Kaia, come here! COME HERE!” I say, trying to sound “dominate”. Her ear doesn’t even twitch.
“KAI-A, CO-ME HE-RE.” I say, very sternly, placing my words with meaning.
She bolts in the direction of the dog.
Okay, so there she leaves me, my nose and ears freezing, my hands too.
I walk slowly and with pride, trying to show her (if she’s looking, ’cause I cannot see for a damn, but now exactly where she’d be) that I mean it.
“Kaia? Kaia, come here…” I whisper. Now this is where I think a failed a bit. I was scared. It was dark, snow everywhere…There are coyotes that hang around my house…
So I find her, and walk a bit closer to her. She looks at me, then bolts around the fence.
I try to get to her, but she just runs.
Now I am pissed.
“Alright, Kaia. I know you’ll come home. I don’t want to get frostbite.. or sick, so I’m leaving. Good luck with you.”
And I walk back home.
I heard her freeze as I turned and took about 6 steps. I heard her collar jingling then stop, and it was like she was looking at my back. I felt guilty, but pushed it away. She WOULD come home.
So I went inside, furious, taking my scarf off. I hear scratching at the garage door. I rish to it, a bit afraid. It could be a coyote! I open it anyway, and Kaia jumps on me.
“Oh, K- No. Sit!” I command, quickly changing from lovy-follower to commanding-leader.
She sits.
“Stay!”
I say while I walk away, unzipping my jacket.
She comes.
I put her back in her place, saying Stay. This repeats three times, till I ultimitly test it out as I go inside for a minute, coming out and seeing her in the exact spots laying down.
I praise her.
Now please, how can I get my dog to not get fixated with The Big Black Dog?
Some might suggest walking by that dog a bunch of times, and I’ve tried that. Didn’t work. I tried letting her sniff around the dog’s fence, didn’t work. I tried making her submit to the dog, didn’t work.
This isn’t just with the big black dog. It’s also with people who walk down the streets, just that it’s a tad different because Kaia just bolts at them without any hesitation. She’ll follow them, jumping up on them (in a friendly way, not that she’s trying to kill them).
Now if they have dogs, Kaia just gets in a bit of a dominance tussle. No blood is spilled, which I learned from the Dog Whisperer means she’s just settling dominance than trying to be aggressive, which is normal in dogs.
So… do you know how to… “unfixate” a dog?
To get another dog or not get another dog that is the question?
Posted by: | CommentsWe aren’t thinking of getting another dog just yet. But we are tossing around the idea.
We already have 2 dogs and we just don’t know if its a good idea or not.
I mean we would love to have a Pure Bred Australian Cattle dog, we really want one and we want to adopt one from the local rescue (they get purebred cattle dog pups in all the time)
But we already have two dogs and it works great now. I mean we go on walks and they both have one of us. Snuggling on the couch they both have a human to snuggle.
I think the dynamic would really change a lot.
So what are the benefits of having 3 dogs vs 2
What are the pros and the cons?
(We have a male poodle and a female mix (we believe she is part Cattle dog)
ADD: We feel if we get another dog though our dogs won’t get to go very many places with us which they currently go everywhere with us
Dog Trouble!?
Posted by: | CommentsI got a new dog 8 months ago, because I wasn’t patient. I really really wanted a male German Shepherd Dog but instead I got a female Australian cattle Dog. I take care of Kaia (acd) really good but…I sorta don’t want her. But what can I tell my dad and mom? I don’t want her to goto the pound, I’d feel guilty. She’s so sweet and nice too. And she’s gonna be with me for a long long time and I don’t want to be unhappy for so long. What should I do?! Please help me, I am so lost right now, P.S. the reason I couldn’t just get a gsd wasn’t because of the money or anything, it was because we didn’t have a fence. The fence just got finished today. My dad, before I got the acd, said I could get a gsd, but then he also said there was a dog for free that he would get me so I accepted (he did tell me it was an Australian Cattle Dog).
I never actually got to choose Kaia. I went with my dad and he met up with a guy. the guy (a breeder) just handed me Kaia and I was told by my dad to get in the car so I did. Kaia was the runt of the litter and we got her for free.
One Fishslayer, besides “dog’s are not our whole life, bu they make our lives whole” I like that saying too.
which of the 2 dog breeds should i get? HELP PLEASE!!!1?
Posted by: | Commentsi have been thinking about belgian tervuren or a australian cattle dog. since i was yound my family has gotten good dogs, nice, very social, always treated nice and loved so as a result always trusting and would wag it’s tail at anybody who came in the door. but for me i want a dog that i can feel I have a special bond with, and i hear that belgian tervuren’s can form a strong bond with one person, but if trained right and loved can maintain a very healthy and good social live with others pets/dogs and people. the cattle dog i have always liked and it seems like a very good dog with a lot of the same traits. but i REALLY want a dog i can take outdoors and go places with and have control of and enjoy eing out and take with me on a jog to the lacrosse fields for some fetch and to just play with it (i go to the field everyday for more than a 2 hr average so activeness of the dog won’t be a problem). i have never had a dog of my own (and my family) that i can enjoy outside with, always been indoor dogs. I will be able to spend the whole summer with it to and will be mainly responsible for it since my dad is working and so are my brother and sister who are in college. and my mom is busy a lot so it will be just me and the dog, so i feel i can get a good relationship with it. the only outdoor dogs i have ever been with are my grandfathers oldest bird dog trained for hunting who is old and is as old as me (16), and his neighbor who has owned a succession of collies over the year, the most recent being bear who i have known almost my whole life. i used to comb the back woods and rivers/swamps of kentucky with him. so yea which of the breeds do you think would fit with me more? i am a dog lover, always have been, always will be.
What dog would be the best for my family?
Posted by: | CommentsYes,I did ask this before but no one seemed to read the information about it, so I’m trying to get an actual answer this time. There is a German Shepherd Mix, an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler, and a Golden Retriever/Lab Mix at our local animal shelter. We can give the dog about 2-3 hours or more of exercise a day, and we can spend 2-3 times a week for grooming the dog. We have two adolesent cats, and a baby on the way, due in November. We plan on keeping the dog inside, we have a medium size house. Here are the links to two of the dogs, for those of you whom keep insisting the German Shepherd and the Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler are pure breeds: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16720911 (I think it is a mix between a German Shepherd and a St.Bernard) http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16720924 . They don’t have a picture up of the Golden Retriever/Lab.
I want a puppy for the child to grow up with, not an adult that might hurt the child. Because they wouldn’t be use to a kid poking it.
What games can I play with a Blue heeler?
Posted by: | CommentsI want to teach my brother’s dog some tricks! He is a smart dog and he loves to fetch his toys!
He is a Blue Heeler(Australian cattle dog).
Dog With Hearing Loss?????
Posted by: | CommentsMy puppy Kiko, about seven months old may have a hearing loss.
I recently adopted him, so we are still getting to know each other.
I live near a fire station and the emergency vehicles turn at my corner. Unlike the other neighborhood dogs, Kiko DOES NOT yelp and bark. Even the fireworks that are already going off in my neighborhood do not upset him.
He can hear me call to him. He gets upset with the sound of the plumbing when my husband turns on and off his shower every morning.
According to the vet records his former family gave me, he’s Australian Cattle Dog and Beagle mix. I think there is also some Lab in his recent genetic background. He’s very dark chocolate brown in some light, inky black in other light, with grey and black feet. Kinda like the way Abbysynian cats are “ticked”.
He’s a wonderful little guy!
He’s a very placid, calm dog. The only time he gets excited is when I come home from work or first thing in the morning.
Could my pup be partially deaf?
He does not react one bit when the emergency vehicals come screeching down the street to the intersection above my house.
How to stop my dogs from having sex..?
Posted by: | CommentsMy pitbull is in heat and my australian cattle dog and we dont want these two to have muts.
We have caught them having sex 3 times, and they dont do it right haha
they get stuck facing away from each other which is really weird
we cant pull them off because something would break, i think she squeezes or is too tight, this is her first heat.
how do we get them off of each other w/o hurting them?
which dog breed of the 2 should i get?

what dog breed would you suggest for these conditions?
Posted by: | Commentsquick note: i am looking to adopt a mutt. i know there has always been a debate over which is better, mixed or pure bred, and i understand the arguments for both. however, for me, part of the joy of having a dog is adopting one that may not have had a chance otherwise.
both me and my father have grown up with dogs and our family has a fairly active lifestyle. he grew up on a farm but now we live in a good sized house with a medium yard. my current dog, a yellow lab/golden retriever mix is 16 years of age and facing many health problems, and we think it is only a matter of time for her. i don’t think my dad or i could imagine life without a dog, but my mom is against the idea for a few reasons.
1. my dog is a female and was the runt of the litter, and is not overweight even in her old age. however, she turned out MUCH larger than you would expect from this breed. my mom wants a dog about the size of a heeler/austraian cattle dog (full grown)
2. my dog now has a tendency to drool, which my mom hates.
3. our dog has coarse fur, she wants one that is “soft” (annoying request, i know)
my question is, what are some mixed breeds that would fall in the medium-sized range, such as an australian cattle dog? i have always had large dogs so any small or medium dog suggestion with all that large dog cute-ness and appeal would be appreciated. (not that i don’t think small dogs are also cute, it’s just a matter of preference)
also, is there any way to tell how large a dog will be, full grown, when they are both a puppy and a mixed breed? i just really want my mom be happy with this addition to our family without a constant fight over size issues or drooling.
