golden retrievers r awesome dogs but i wouldn’t suggest getting one if u live in NYC. these dogs need plenty of exercise and it’s hazardous to their health if they get over weight. i used to hav one but it passed away at the age of 4, very young, bcuz it was over weight and didn’t exercise much. hope u find an awesome dog!!!

Golden retreivers are very friendly and easily trainable dogs, but if you live in the city just keep in mind that they need a fair amount of excercise. Be prepared to take it to a dog park quite often if you don’t have a big enough yard.

If I were you and I lived in NYC, I would get a Pit Bull.

Golden are beautiful and very energetic dogs. They are a sporting breed.
If you have alot of time for exercising the dog and peoper training and if you don’t mind the shedding 2times a year then yes I’d say a Golden would do very nicely for you.
They are considered a large breed dog meaning they can get up to 85-90 pounds for a male and 65 to 75 for a female.
They are smart and learn easily, trianing is a must, they can be distructive if they are bored! Not much of a barker but they will alert you to who ever is at the door. These dogs are very people friendly and even other dog friendly!
If you can see a Golden in your life and if they will fit into your life style then yes please go find a good breeder and pick out your Golden!

I’ll assume you live in an apartment. That said, Goldens make the most wonderful pets. But they need a great deal of the right kind of care. Make sure you or someone in your home is willing to spend 30 to 60 minutes a day playing with and exercising the dog.
Purchase a hand vacuum. Its hair will stick to everything.
Regular brushing will prevent matting, which can quickly become a nuisance. Note that this breed sheds a lot. The main reason people give up their goldens is because they shed too much. The second reason is that they got bigger than expected.

It is important to keep the weight down. They gain very easily, so exercise, exercise, exercise!

I would have one if the apartment isn’t too small. They do get big, and one sweep with the tail can clear a coffeetable.

Goldens are wonderful, mellow dogs, but they’re not bred for the city and need exercise.

I used to work in Manhattan and saw all the people letting their dogs run around on designated areas of Central Park. So people DO have large dogs, but I don’t know how. I would think there are some challenges.

If you live in an apartment, the noise might be a problem. Goldens don’t bark that much but when they do, are the neighbors going to complain? And big dogs leave big, um, droppings, a couple of times a day, every day.
Can you deal with that?

If you live in one of the outer boroughs in a house with a fenced-in yard, that would be ideal for a relatively big dog like a Golden.

I have a cousin who lives in Queens and she has a Duck Tolling Retriever. I think they’re similar to Goldens but smaller. You may want to check that out.

No!!! You can’t even spell the breed’s name right!!

The previous answer is so wrong. Don’t get a puppy unless you are prepared for weeks and weeks of accidents. And destroyed shoes and chewed up underwear. You will go through dozens of remote controls, cellphones and wallets. A puppy is just like a baby–it’s going wake up every few hours and cry. You’re going to have to get up and take it outside when it does. And you live in NYC?? In an apt? So will you have to get up, get dressed, get in the elevator and get outside before it pees or poops? Yea, right.
Before you even think about getting a dog, go to an adoption fair or two–talk to knowledgeable people who know a thing or two about puppies and adult dogs, and think about adoption rather than buying a dog. MILLIONS of dogs and cats are euthanized EVERY YEAR because people are irresponsible when they acquire a pet. And usually, they go straight to the pound when it just gets too much to handle. Don’t be one of those people–research first and do a search on adopting dogs. And most, most importantly–make sure if you end up getting a dog–spay or neuter as soon as you can. Don’t contribute to the millions of dead pets by having an unwanted and unnecessary litter!!

And learn to spell Golden R-e-t-r-i-e-v-e-r!!!!!!!
