Question about my 10 month old Sheltie puppy?
ByI have a gorgeous Shetland Sheepdog whom I was thinking about showing. My concern is that while brushing his teeth the other day, I noticed that one canine is missing. Could it have been a baby tooth he lost? Or could it have permenantly broken off? It’s not like there is part of a tooth there though. Is this a disqualification? Help!

Normally dog’s loose their baby teeth around 4 months of age, and are done with it by the time they are 5.5 – 6 months old.
If not sure, ask your vet to have a look.

Yes if the tooth doesn’t come in then it is a disqualification.
Bring the pup to the vets and have them check this out before you get all nervous.

If the dog is actually missing an adult tooth, then thats probably bad for showing….if its not a disqual then its almost certain not a good trait. I would wait and see if it comes back. If it doesnt, get he/she fixed and say hello to your companion animal.

Hi,
I have two shelties. I would call the breeder, if they can’t answer this question. Call the local kennel club and ask them to put you in touch with a sheltie judge, or with someone who shows regularly.
American Kennel Club website will list breeders, and have contact info http://www.akc.org
Also search on yahoo groups for sheltie or shetland sheepdog, there are group lists just for sheltie owners, join one and ask this type of list your question

Have your vet check first, before you start to worry. He may be a late bloomer. If he is missing that tooth the judge can dismissed from the ring. This is why the judge looks at their teeth when in the ring. The judge may even ask you what happened. On the other hand, I have seen dogs that are shown with chipped teeth and worn down. If your dog has a perfect bite other than that, you may be able to still show him. Accidents do happen.Hope it all works out for the best. Good luck;^)

If that tooth does not come in, then you will be severely counted off. Shelties are ALWAYS checked for their dental in show, as they are known for dental problems (even if its nothing that affects your dog’s regular routine).
It is hard to say without seeing this first hand, but your best bet is to check with your vet.
