The police want to buy my dog but…?
BySo I have a female dog called Lulu. She is three years old. She is a very smart dog. I let my dads’ friend (Who is a police officer) train her.
He asked me a few days ago if I wanted to sell my dog to the police. He said she would really help them. He said he would give me time to think about it.
I love my dog, and I think I would be sad without her. But on the other hand, she would help save people.
What do I do?

This is not a situation that a bunch of stranger can help with.
Either decision is understandable.

She’s YOUR dog. Don’t feel guilty about not wanting to sell her.
They probably want her because they can offer you less than they would have to pay going through their regular route of buying a new police dog.
You can think of it this way – yes she may save a couple of people, but she will also be prone to injury and death on the job.

if you really love her and she really love you i think you shouldn’t give her away. your dad’s friend will understand.

The choice is yours, she is your dog.
Police dogs often live and stay with their handler in their home. You could always see if you could get to know the officer handling Lulu, and visit her sometimes.

I agree, it’s something only you can decide, good luck with your decision.

Here’s something I hope will help.As far as I know police dogs don’t really get much chance to save people. They are used to find criminals and drugs. They may save police officers, and that’s a good thing, but That’s your dog.The police have special dogs they get from Germany and train them specifically for that type of work.I don’t believe he meant any harm in asking but if you want your dog to be a part of the family, instead of a quick buck,I would say no,don’t sell him to anyone.I hope this helps.Good luck.Another fact to consider, police dogs get hurt too.

Like Rottified said, no one can make this decision for you. It’s completely your choice.
Me? I wouldn’t give my dog to the police. I would, however, allow the army to use him. Maybe it’s worse, but I fully support the armed forces.
But it would probably KILL me, either way, to be without my dog. So, I can see your problem… Think more about the dog, and not yourself. She’ll be trained, happy, constantly working(which is what dogs love to do), she’ll have many breaks to play ball, she’ll be very well exercised… And when she retires, she’ll go back to you. And, like you said, she would help people.
But, at the same time, she wouldn’t have you. And a lot of dogs find not having their owners very stressful. My dog falls into a depression when I’m not around. And I mean literally. According to my family, he lays by the door and watches outside, looking absolutely miserable. I don’t know, because when I’m home, he seems very happy and is always ready to play, or ready to sleep, whichever I want. So, I don’t know if I really could give him to anyone.
Hm… Now you have me thinking lol…
Whatever you choose, no one will blame you.
Best of luck,

The dog would be put at risk with that job, the first thing people will shoot at is a dog if gotten the chance. Don’t let him guilt you into it.

The answer can go either way:
You could sell the dog and have it save people and you could ask them if it could still live with you or could you at least see it a few times a month….
-or-
You could keep it…. take for walk feed it and give it water.

I think that if the officer trained her then they also have a bond to each other. He obviously sees something special about her talents and that she could be part of the greater good. You said she is a very smart dog and the type of work she will be doing will stimulate her and keep her life interesting. I know you love your dog….who can’t love a dog?? But you could love another dog just as much.

You will have to consider your bond with this dog. How strong is it really? Also, take into account how you would feel if she were to get hurt or die on the job. Will you feel really guilty, or will you be able to say, “she died doing what she loved”? Think about what your dog might want, but equally as important, think about what YOU want. If the police station is close, maybe you can still visit her often and bring her treats to maintain your bond with her, but be aware that as a working dog, there will be risk involved. (Then again, dogs kept strictly as pets probably have just as likelihood of getting hit by a car)
Maybe you can strike a deal with them, so that when she gets too old and has to retire, they return the dog to you to spend the golden years of her life.

Think of it this way.
You go to school every day. Your teacher teaches you.
Then your teacher asks your mom if she can adopt you.
Would your mom let you go?

Police raise their own dogs, they don’t buy dogs from strangers.
