Well, there are no small breeds in the list of top smartest dogs.
A lot of people say Jack Russell Terriers are very intelligent. I would say they fall in the category of very intelligent but not easily trained.
I suggest a Westie or a Cairn Terrier (or similar sized terrier with scottish ancestry). These dogs are very sweet, small, and trainable.

Maltese are so very cute and have a high intelligence level that will astound you. They easily learn 300 words and can talk to you with their eyes but often time to mimic our talk and make sounds.. to us = at us.
A Maltese has naturally white *hair*.. nope they don’t shed and if kept at an even room temperature they won’t even moult. They have skin not hide so you will have to use your own shampoo and conditioner on them..
Their hair will need to be cut as they can grow it right down and onto the ground or they can also get *split ends*…
Maltese = the pet of the beautiful stars of Hollywood.. Liz Taylor goes no place without hers… lol
SEW = have fun choosing

mutts…
My neighbor adopted two small dogs from a small dog rescue group. They are both mix breeds, and very smart.
I hope you will consider adoption. There are also rescue groups that only do purebreds.

What you actually want is the top TRAINABLE dogs – not the smartest. A smart dog will think more for itself. They tend to be more cat-like – enjoying lounging on the couch and just looking at you while you ask it to do something. They are asking themselves, “What is in it for me?” Here is one of my favorite dog breed links with information on different dog breeds. http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/breeds/

The dogs they use for like cops are very smart. Like the dogs they use to find drugs. Also Jack Russel Terriors are also pretty smart. I own 2 of them and sometimes i think they out smart me. lol

There are smart dogs and then there are dogs that love to please! People think labs and goldens are the smartest dogs, which is not the case, they just really want to please, training them is very easy. The smart dogs are the terriers and herding dogs, but they are tough to train. They aren’t too interested in pleasing people, and they are stubborn little buggers! So, the real question is, do you want a dog that’s easy to train, or a smart dog? Papillons, from my experience are not easy to train, but Pomeranians are!

#1- border collie #2-poodle #3-golden retriever
These are the smartest dogs in the world, but in my opinion, they are not the best type of dog to have. i prefer a Labrador retriever. But if you don’t get one, avoid getting an Afghan hound. They are the least intelligent!

to be honest i don’t think they are really any breeders than can be deemed smarter than others… it is all how you train your dog! i’ve met ill-behaved border collies and golden retrievers and intelligent bichons and chihuahuas!

I don’t know if their is a list of “smart breeds”, but rather those that easier to train than others. But in saying that, how a dog responds to training depends on who is actually doing the training.
One must be consistent and patient, with training. To me, the outcome of dog training is more dependent on the trainer than on the dog. FYI – when I say trainer, I mean the owner, and not the “official” dog trainer who holds a class, or gives private lessons. I

Border collies are the smartest dogs and are proven so (by whatever means one proves that).

The #1 ranked dog in intelligence is the Border Collie, I believe followed by the Standard Poodle. As far as small breeds, I am not sure.

your question may not be answerable. When it comes to breeds in general there really is NO smart breed. Breeds by themselves do not define smart it is in the dog itself and it’s ability to comprehend. I have seen the dog testing for over 45 years and from day to day a different breed of dog will do better than the the breed of dog tested prior. It is just a matter of observing a puppy to see what kind of reaction you get from it, whether by bouncing a ball to see if it reacts playfully to it or just sits and watches it. If it reacts to your voice etc. But as for breed intelligence, there is no true breed more intelligent than another since most breeds were bred to perform specific functions and in many cases these functions did not require human direction people assume that these breeds are stupid since they may not respond as others may. The reason is they do not have to. It was not bred into them. These breeds are actually very intelligent but most humans do not recognize this and assume the dog therefore must not be to bright. Just go check out small breed puppies at the shelters or with breeders and watch the dogs reaction to you.

Papillons are in the top ten smartest dog breeds. I have a shetland sheepdog, and he is easily the best dog Ive ever had. He is beautiful, and he learned well. In my big family, we never really had time to house train our dogs, but he picked up on it and he never goes inside, no matter how bad he has to go. He is also loyal. Even when I bring out the brush, or he knows hes getting a bath, he doesnt run, but grudgingly follows me so I can get the job done. Really, the only problem that he has is that he barks too much..but he is easily quieted. It is like his only joy in life is making his family happy. And if you have any kids, they are gentle and good with children.
